γυναικῶν. Some of them may have come to offer the anodynes which were supposed to be demanded by the Rabbinic interpretation of Proverbs 31:6. This is the only other recorded incident of the procession to Calvary, and it is mentioned by St Luke alone. It is a sad fact that no man—even of His Apostles—seems to have come forward to support these His last hours.

ἐκόπτοντο … αὐτόν. ‘Were beating their breasts for Him.’ Comp. Luke 8:52; Luke 18:13.
