These implements of the builder were naturally employed where a partial destruction (of houses, &c.) was contemplated; but the image is also extended to the case of complete demolition; 2 Kings 21:13; Lamentations 2:8. "Confusion" and "emptiness" stand for the words tôhûand bôhû, used of the primeval chaos in Genesis 1:2 (cf. Jeremiah 4:23).
