boasting Lit. the boasting; i.e. probably "the boasting of the Jew in his pride of privilege." This reference is supported by the next three verses, especially if "for" is read in Romans 3:28 (q.v.).

the law of faith The word "law," in Greek as in English, is elastic in its reference. In English it is freely used for two almost opposite conceptions, a moral law and a law of nature; of which the first is a precept of duty à priori, the second a statement of observed facts à posteriori. Here the word, connected with faith, evidently means not a moral code but a rule of procedure; the Divine institutethat justification is reached only by faith.
