The Hebrew word translated idolatry refers to either “household gods” (Genesis 31:19; Judges 17:5; 1 Samuel 19:13) or “ancestor figurines” used as aids in divination (Ezekiel 21:21; Hosea 3:4; Zechariah 10:2). Saul is rejected as king here and also in 1 Samuel 15:26 (see 1 Samuel 13:13).
