ISAIAH—NOTE ON Isaiah 36:1 Historical Transition: “In Whom Do You Now Trust?” These chapters of history form a bridge between the mostly poetic chs. Isaiah 1:1 and Isaiah 40:1. Chapters Isaiah 36:1 look back to chs. Isaiah 28:1, proving through Hezekiah that faith in God is rewarded by blessing. Chapters Isaiah 38:1 provide the context for chs. Isaiah 40:1, as Hezekiah’s foolishness dooms his nation to Babylonian exile. Against the backdrop of divine faithfulness (chs. Isaiah 36:1) and human faithlessness (chs. Isaiah 38:1), God stands as his people’s only hope. Isaiah 36:1 is paralleled in 2 Kings 18:13 (see notes).
