LUKE—NOTE ON Luke 18:14 Jesus pronounces a shocking reversal of common expectations (see Luke 14:11 and Introduction: Key Themes). The Pharisee thought he was “righteous” (Luke 18:9) and tried to justify himself (compare Luke 16:15). The tax collector depended on God’s mercy. As a result he received God’s gift of righteousness and was pronounced justified.
