MATTHEW—NOTE ON Matthew 5:39 Do not resist the one who is evil. Jesus does not prohibit governments, police, or soldiers from using force when opposing evil (see notes on Luke 3:12–14; Romans 13:1; 1 Peter 2:13). Rather, Jesus prohibits the human tendency to seek personal revenge (see note on Rom. 12:17–19). if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. One should not return an insulting slap. However, acting in love toward an attacker (Matthew 5:44; Matthew 22:39) often includes preventing him from attempting further attacks. Jesus does not prohibit self-defense or fleeing from harm (see 1 Samuel 19:10; Luke 4:29; John 8:59).
