οὐ καθὼς, κ. τ. λ., a loose, almost ungrammatical expression, analogous to John 6:58. Were there no οὐ, 1 John 3:11 might be regarded as a parenthesis: “he that loveth not his brother, even as Cain was, etc.”. The phrase is elliptical: “We must not hate our brethren, even as Cain was, etc.”. τοῦ πον., see note on 1 John 2:18. ἔσφαξεν, a strong word, “slaughtered,” “butchered,” properly by cutting the throat (jugulare), like an ox in the shambles.
