πενιχρὰν, needy, from πένομαι or πένης; a poetic word rarely used, here only in N.T. πτωχὴ, Mk.'s word, is stronger = reduced to beggary. δύο λεπτά. Lk. does not think it necessary to explain what the coin was or what the contribution amounted to. Mk. states its value in Roman coinage (κοδράντης).
