In crucifying Jesus, the rulers did just as the Old Testament prophets had predicted that people would do to the Messiah. "Recognizing neither Him nor the utterances of the prophets" They did not recognize Jesus as the Messiah because He did not fit their preconceived ideas, even though Jesus offered clear proof that He was the Messiah (John 5:36 ff).
