Romans 8:38

For. am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, "For. am persuaded" -'I stand convinced' (Robertson p. 379) This is the key, as to why some Christians fail and others succeed. It all comes down to 'conviction, faith, trust' (Romans 1:17). The person that can't allow themselves to trust God, will fail! The good news is 'trust' is something that we have control over. We don't have control over the 'externals nor many of the circumstances', but we do have control over what we choose to believe! And 'who' we choose to trust.
