John 12:4 VIou,daj o` VIskariw,thj ei-j @evk# tw/n maqhtw/n auvtou/

The identification of Judas as Si,mwnoj (A K X D Q P Y 065 ¦13 28 Byz) or as Si,mwn (1195 1242* 1344 2148 al) is a scribal accretion derived from John 6:71. These same witnesses also smooth the sequence by placing the name after the indefinite ei-j evk tw/n maqhtw/n auvtou/ and before o` me,llwn auvto.n paradido, nai. It was thought best to retain the words ei-j evk, an expression that occurs in eleven other passages in the Fourth Gospel, but in view of the absence of evk in such early and noteworthy witnesses as î66, 75vid B L W 33, to enclose it within square brackets. (For the reading of D, see the comments on 6.71 and Mt 10.4.)
