Inasmuch as elsewhere the solemn expression avmh.n le,gw u`mi/n is always introductory and is never preceded by a protasis, 17 it appears that the original reading is the exhortation :Ecete pi,stin qeou/, and that the reading introduced by eiv (a D Q ¦13 28 al) arose by assimilation to the saying in Luke 17:6 (cf. also Matthew 21:21).


17 It should be observed that here eiv may not only be taken as the ordinary conditional particle (“If you have faith in God, …”), but can also be construed as an interrogative particle introducing (like Hebrew ~a) a direct question (“Do you have faith in God?”; see Blass-Debrunner-Funk, § 440 (3)).
