The difficulty of understanding the significance of pugmh|/ (literally “with a [the] fist”) in a context explaining Jewish ceremonial washings prompted some copyists to omit it (D syrs copsa) and others to replace it with a word that gives better sense, such as pukna, (“often” or “thoroughly,” a W itb, l vg al), or momento (“in a moment,” ita), or primo (“first,” itd).
