Cannot hate

(ου δυνατα μισειν). Because of "the law of moral correspondence" (Westcott), often in John for "inherent impossibility" (Vincent). The brothers of Jesus here belong to the unbelieving world (κοσμος) which is unable to love Jesus (John 15:18; John 15:23; John 15:24) and which Jesus had already exposed ("testify," μαρτυρω, John 5:42; John 5:45). This unbelieving "world" resented the exposure (John 3:19, cf. John 18:37).
