1 Corinthians 1:2

To them that are sanctified, &c.— Nothing could better suit the candid and catholic views whichSt. Paul was so much concerned to promote in this Epistle, than the declaration of his good wishes in this verse for every true Christian upon earth, whether Jew or Gentile, learned or unlearned, Greek or barbarian. The original, which we render call upon the name of Jesus Christ,— τοις επικαλουμενοις το οιομα, Mr. Locke renders, all that are called by the name of Jesus Christ,—the Greek words being a periphrasis for Christians, as is plain from the design of this verse, and from a variety of proofs given by Dr. Hammond on the place.
