_AND THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL TOOK THEIR JOURNEY FROM BEEROTH OF THE CHILDREN OF JAAKAN TO MOSERA: THERE AARON DIED, AND THERE HE WAS BURIED; AND ELEAZAR HIS SON MINISTERED IN THE PRIEST'S OFFICE IN HIS STEAD._ The children of Israel took their journey. So sudden a change from a spoken discourse to a historical narrative has greatly puzzled the most eminent Biblical scholars, some of whom reject the parenthesis as a manifest interpolation. Kennicott has shown that these two verses have been dislocated and transposed from their proper connection, which is after Deuteronomy 2:11. 'Eusebius and Jerome relate that the place of the Beeroth (wells), Bene-jaakan, was still shown in their day, 10 Roman miles from Petra, at the top of the mountain' (Robinson's 'Biblical Researches,' 2:, p. 583). 1-11 Moses reminded the Israelites of God's great mercy to them, notwithstanding their provocations. There were four things in and by which the Lord showed himself reconciled to Israel. God gave them his law. Thus God has intrusted us with Bibles, sabbaths, and sacraments, as tokens of his presence and favour. God led them forward toward Canaan. He appointed a standing ministry among them for holy things. And now, under the gospel, when the pouring forth of the Spirit is more plentiful and powerful, the succession is kept up by the Spirit's work on men's hearts, qualifying and making some willing for that work in every age. God accepted Moses as an advocate or intercessor for them, and therefore appointed him to be their prince and leader. Moses was a type of Christ, who ever lives, pleading for us, and has all power in heaven and in earth....

These verses are closely connected with the preceding chapter, and state very briefly the results of the intercession of Moses recorded in Deuteronomy 9:25. The people are reminded that all their blessings and privileges, forfeited by apostasy as soon as bestowed, were only now their own by a new and most unmerited act of grace on the part of God, won from Him by the self-sacrificing mediation of Moses himself Deuteronomy 10:10. Which Jarchi takes to be the same with Horhagidgad, and so do most; see Numbers 33:32, but Aben Ezra says it is not, but is a general name, including Zalmonah, Punon, and Oboth, places the Israelites came to after they removed from Mount Hor, where Aaron died; see Numbers 33:41 AND FROM GUDGODAH TO JOTBATH, A LAND OF RIVERS OF WATERS; which the above writer takes to be the same with Beer, the well, Numbers 21:16 and by this description of it, it was a place where there was much water....

DEUTERONOMY 9:7_ b -_ DEUTERONOMY 10:11 (or DEUTERONOMY 10:9). Narrative of the legislation on Mount Horeb; for the purpose apparently of illustrating Deuteronomy 9:7_ a._ This historical survey suddenly thrust into a hortatory context closely resembles Deuteronomy 1-3, and is thought by Horst and Bertholet to be by the same author. They agree with Steuernagel (who, however, says its closest affinities are with Deuteronomy 5) in holding it to be an interpolation here. But surely the history in this section is didactic and therefore hortatory....

Interruption of the address by a piece of narrative, recording certain stations of Israel with Aaron's death and Eleazar's succession, in which Israel are spoken of in the 3rd pers., and the phraseology is not deuteronomic. Obviously the fragment of an old itinerary. Although the names it contains are also found in an itinerary given by P, Numbers 33, they occur here in a different order; another name is given to the death-place of Aaron than P gives, nor do we find P's usual formula for Israel on the march _they journeyed from … and pitched at_.… The fragment is therefore from another source than P. That this was E (D's main source) is almost certain. The fragment uses E's formula, _they journeyed from thence to_…, and may originally have formed part of the same itinerary of E, from which there are fragments in Numbers 21

_VER._ 6, 7. _AND THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL TOOK THEIR JOURNEY FROM BEEROTH,_ &C.— Beeroth is rendered _wells_ by many. Calmet observes on this passage, "It is, doubtless, very difficult for us to arrive at Moses's purpose in reciting these words; but it is not always permitted us to penetrate into the designs of the spirit of God: it suffices, that all the Scriptures are canonical in all their parts, to merit our highest respect." There are certainly several difficulties in the Hebrew text. For, in the 6th verse, it is said, that _the children of Israel journeyed from the children of Jaakan to Mosera,_ when, in the Book of Numbers, where their journeys are enumerated, it is said, that _they came from Mosera unto the children of Jaakan._ Again, it is here said, that _Aaron died in Mosera;_ and in the book of Numbers, that _he died in mount Hor._ But the Samaritan text entirely removes these...
