21-29 Moses encouraged Joshua, who was to succeed him. Thus the aged and experienced in the service of God, should do all they can to strengthen the hands of those who are young, and setting out in religion. Consider what God has done, what God has promised. If God be for us, who can be against us, so as to prevail? We reproach our Leader if we follow him trembling. Moses prayed, that, if it were God's will, he might go before Israel, over Jordan into Canaan. We should never allow any desires in our hearts, which we cannot in faith offer up to God by prayer. God's answer to this prayer had a mixture of mercy and judgment. God sees it good to deny many things we desire. He may accept our prayers, yet not grant us the very things we pray for. It God does not by his providence give us what we desire, yet if by his grace he makes us content without, it comes to much the same. Let it suffice...

Verse Deuteronomy 3:28. _BUT CHARGE JOSHUA, C._] Give him _authority_ in the sight of the people, let them see that he has the same _commission_ which I gave to thee. _Encourage him_ for he will meet with many difficulties in the work to which he is called. _And strengthen_ _him _- show him my unfailing promises, and exhort him to put his trust in me alone; _for he shall go over before this people, and_ _shall cause them to inherit the land_; of this let him rest perfectly assured....

_VER._ 21-29. As Joshua was ordained to succeed Moses in the government, he repeats the encouragement that he gave him to be brave and confident in so good a cause. Joshua had seen already some of God's mighty acts, and he was assured that such would be the success which should ever attend him, since it was the Lord who fought their battles. If God be for us, wherefore should we fear or doubt? Moses mentions his own desire and prayer, and the refusal he met with. 1. He adores God for the mercies he had already tasted, admiring the power and greatness of the works which he had shown to Israel; and intimates his wish that he might behold still greater displays of God's glory, in the perfection of his people's settlement. _Note;_ (1.)
