Deuteronomy 34:2

_AND ALL NAPHTALI, AND THE LAND OF EPHRAIM, AND MANASSEH, AND ALL THE LAND OF JUDAH, UNTO THE UTMOST SEA,_ No JFB commentary on these verses....

1-4 Moses seemed unwilling to leave his work; but that being finished, he manifested no unwillingness to die. God had declared that he should not enter Canaan. But the Lord also promised that Moses should have a view of it, and showed him all that good land. Such a sight believers now have, through grace, of the bliss and glory of their future state. Sometimes God reserves the brightest discoveries of his grace to his people to support their dying moments. Those may leave this world with cheerfulness, who die in the faith of Christ, and in the hope of heaven....

EXPOSITION DEATH, BURIAL, AND ENCOMIUM OF MOSES. After blessing the people, Moses, in obedience to the Divine command, ascended Mount Nebo, the highest peak of the Pisgah range, and thence surveyed the whole land of Canaan, from north to south, and from east to west, as well as the district on the east of the Jordan, not included in Canaan proper. DEUTERONOMY 34:1 UNTO THE MOUNTAIN OF NEBO, TO THE TOP OF PISGAH; rather, _unto Mount Nebo_,_ the summit of Pisgah_._ _GILEAD UNTO DAN. AND ALL NAPHTALI,.... Which lay in the northern part of the land, and where was Galilee of the Gentiles, and so he had a sight of all that country most frequented by the Messiah when come, see Matthew 4:13; AND THE LAND OF EPHRAIM AND MANASSEH: which lay in the midland part of the country: AND ALL THE LAND OF JUDAH; which lay to the south: UNTO THE UTMOST SEA; the Mediterranean sea, which was the western boundary of the land, called the "hinder sea", Zechariah 14:8; and might as well be so rendered here, for the same word is used: Jarchi would have it read, not the "hinder sea", but the "latter day": for, he says, the Lord showed to Moses all that should happen to Israel until the resurrection of the dead; and so the Targum of Jonathan paraphrase

_all Naphtali_ The lofty country N. and N.W. of the Lake of Galilee, some of whose hills, over 2,500 feet, may (as Dri. says) be visible from Nebo, as the lower Mt Tabor to the S. of them is. _and_ ALL _the land of Ephraim and Manasseh_ So LXX. These certainly are in sight with Ebal and Gerizim and the intervening valley particularly distinct. _all the land of Judah, unto the hinder sea_ A natural hyperbole; the hinder or Western Sea (Deuteronomy 11:24). The Mediterranean is hidden by the hills of Judah. But again the bulk of Judah is in sight, and the Sea is mentioned as its W. boundary....

_VER._ 1-3. _AND MOSES WENT UP FROM THE PLAINS OF MOAB,_ &C.— As soon as he had taken this solemn leave of his nation, Moses, according to the divine appointment, ch. Deuteronomy 32:49 retired privately to the top of mount _Nebo_ called _Pisgah,_ from whence God enabled him to take a distinct and particular prospect of the land of Canaan. The mention of _Dan_ in the first verse, and the account of Moses's death and burial, and of some particulars which happened after he had left the world, from the fifth verse to the end, shew, that this chapter was not written by Moses. It was probably added either by Samuel, Ezra, or some other of the prophets who succeeded him.
