_MOREOVER THE LORD THY GOD WILL SEND THE HORNET AMONG THEM, UNTIL THEY THAT ARE LEFT, AND HIDE THEMSELVES FROM THEE, BE DESTROYED._ God will send the hornet among them. 'It is of the same appearance and colour as the ordinary wasp, but rather more than double its size. The black line which connects the head and throat with the abdomen is about one-eighth of an inch in length, and not thicker than a horse hair. Stings from such animals must have been formidable wounds; and a region haunted by hosts of such winged lancers must speedily have been abandoned by its inhabitants' ('Tent and Khan,' p. 390: see the notes at Exodus 23:28; Joshua 24:11)....

20._Moreover, the Lord thy God will send the hornet. _Since the destruction of their enemies might seem long, if they were only to be slain by their hands and weapons, and again, because it was scarcely credible that, without defending themselves, they would voluntarily stretch forth their own throats, God promises that in another way also He would supply the means of their conquest. Therefore, lest the Israelites, imagining that their enemies would be prompt and vigorous in resistance, should be alarmed or affrighted, God declares that other forces should be at hand, for that hornets or other poisonous insects should destroy all the fugitives. DEUTERONOMY 7:1 The Israelites were about to enter on a country occupied by idolaters, and they are commanded not to spare them or to allow them to continue in their proximity, or to have any friendly relations with them (cf. Leviticus 27:28). The Lord would cast out these nations, and deliver them, though greater and mightier than they, into their hands; and they were to smite them and place them under the ban; they were to make no covenant with them nor form any alliances with them (cf. MOREOVER, THE LORD THY GOD WILL SEND THE HORNET AMONG THEM,.... Not a single one, but several of them, and which may be understood of creatures so called, which resemble wasps, only twice as large, an insect very bold and venomous; see Exodus 23:28. Aben Ezra interprets it of the leprosy: UNTIL THEY THAT ARE LEFT, AND HIDE THEMSELVES FROM THEE, BE DESTROYED; such of the Canaanites who escaped the sword of the Israelites, and hid themselves in holes and caverns of the earth; these the hornets would find out and sting them to death, until they were all destroyed.
