In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: IN WHOM - as holding together the whole. ALL THE (SO A C; BUT B DELTA G 'ALEPH (') OMIT THE: 'EVERY') BUILDING - structure. FITLY FRAMED - so as exactly to fit together. GROWTH - `is growing' continually. Here an additional thought is added: the Church has the growth of a living organism besides the solid increase of a building. Compare , "lively stones ... built up a spiritual house." 21._In whom all the building groweth. _If this be true, what will become of Peter? When Paul, in writing to the Corinthians, speaks of Christ as a “Foundation,” he does not mean that the church is begun by him and completed by others, but draws a distinction arising out of a comparison of his own labors with those of other men. It had been his duty to found the church at Corinth, and to leave to his successors the completion of the building. “According to the grace of God which is given to me, as a wise master-builder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth on it.” (1 Corinthians 3:10.) With respect to the present passage, he conveys the instruction, that all who are _fitly framed together in Christ _are the temple of the Lord. Verse 21. _IN WHOM_] By which foundation corner stone, Christ Jesus, _all the building_, composed of converted Jews and Gentiles, _fitly framed together_, συναρμολογουμενη, _properly jointed and_ _connected together, groweth unto a holy temple_-is _continually_ _increasing_, as new converts from Judaism or heathenism flock into it. It is not a _finished_ building, but will continue to _increase_, and be _more_ and _more perfect_, till the day of judgment....

IN WHOM - That is, “by” whom, or “upon” whom. It was in connection with him, or by being reared on him as a foundation. ALL THE BUILDING - The whole church of Christ. FITLY FRAMED TOGETHER - The word used here means “to joint together,” as a carpenter does the frame-work of a building. The materials are accurately and carefully united by mortises and tenons. so that the building shall be firm. Different materials may be used, and different kinds of timber may be employed, but one part shall be worked into another, so as to constitute a durable and beautiful edifice. So in the church. IN WHOM ALL THE BUILDING FITLY FRAMED TOGETHER,.... This building is to be understood of all the saints, and people of God; of the whole universal church, which is God's building; and is a building of a spiritual nature, and will abide for ever: and this is fitly framed together; it consists of various parts, as a building does; some saints are comparable to beams, some to rafters, others to pillars, c. and these are joined and united to one another, and are set in an exact symmetry and proportion, and in a proper subserviency to each other and so as to make for the good, the strength, and beauty of the whole. Ephesians 2:1. _And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;_ What a great change, then, has taken place in the people of God! It is described as being similar to the resurrection of the dead. And do you suppose that this took place without a man's knowing it? Do you think that we are wrong in stating a wide difference between the quickened ones and the dead? I trow not. In fact, those addresses made to congregations in which there is no distinction made between the living and the dead in Zion, are deceptive. And prayers that are meant to suit congregations of mingled character, where some are dead in sin, and others alive unto God, are, on the very face of them, an attempt at an impossibility. As great as is the distinction between the dead in their graves and living men that walk the streets, so great is the difference between the regenerate and unregenerate.
