Ephesians 3:11

According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: WHICH HE PURPOSED - Greek, made (to be fulfilled) in Christ Jesus' ()....

11._According to the eternal purpose. _How carefully does he guard against the objection, that the purpose of God has been changed! A third time, he repeats that the decree was eternal and unchangeable, but must be carried into effect by _Christ Jesus our Lord, _because in him it was made. Thus he declares, that the proper time for publishing this decree belongs to the kingdom of Christ. Literally the words run, “according to the eternal purpose ( ἣν ἐποίησοεν) _which he made. _” But I consider the meaning to be, _which he purposed; _because the present discussion does not relate solely to the execution of the decree, but to the appointment itself, which, though it took place before all ages, was known to God only — till the manifestation of Christ....

8-12 Those whom God advances to honourable employments, he makes low in their own eyes; and where God gives grace to be humble, there he gives all other needful grace. How highly he speaks of Jesus Christ; the unsearchable riches of Christ! Though many are not enriched with these riches; yet how great a favour to have them preached among us, and to have an offer of them! And if we are not enriched with them it is our own fault. The first creation, when God made all things out of nothing, and the new creation, whereby sinners are made new creatures by converting grace, are of God by Jesus Christ. His riches are as unsearchable and as sure as ever, yet while angels adore the wisdom of God in the redemption of his church, the ignorance of self-wise and carnal men deems the whole to be foolishness....

Verse 11. _ACCORDING TO THE ETERNAL PURPOSE_] κατα προθεσιν των αιωνων. _According to the purpose concerning the periods_. This seems to refer to the _complete round_ of the _Jewish system_, and to that of the _Gospel_. I have often observed, that though the proper grammatical meaning of the word is _ever-during_ or _endless_ _duration_, yet it is often applied to those _systems, periods,_ _governments_, c., which have a _complete duration_, taking in the whole of them, from their _commencement_ to their _termination_, leaving nothing of their duration unembraced. So, here, God purposed that the Jewish dispensation should commence at such a time, and terminate at such a time that the Gospel dispensation should commence when the Jewish ended, and terminate only with life itself; and that the _results_ of both should be _endless_. This is probably what is meant by the above phrase....

ACCORDING TO THE ETERNAL PURPOSE - see the note, Ephesians 1:4. Literally, “the purpose of ages,” or of eternity. Locke, Chandler, and Whitby render this, “according to that disposition or arrangement of the ages which he made in Jesus Christ, or through him.” The object of such an interpretation seems to be to avoid the doctrine that God had a purpose or plan in the salvation of people, and hence such expositors suppose it refers to the arrangement of the “ages” of the world by which the plan of redemption was introduced. On the word rendered here as “purpose” - προθέσις prothesis - see the notes at Romans 8:28; compare Ephesians 1:11. I
