That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. THOU MAYEST LIVE (LITERALLY, THOU SHALT: A LASTING AND SURE EFFECT OF OBEDIENCE) LONG ON THE EARTH. In , "long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee," which Paul adapts to Gospel times by taking away the local reference to Canaan. The godly are equally blessed in every land, as the Jews were in the land which God gave them. 3._That it may be well with thee_. The promise is — a long life; from which we are led to understand that the present life is not to be overlooked among the gifts of God. The whole commandment as there recorded is, “Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” The meaning here is, that they would be more happy, useful, and virtuous if they obeyed their parents than if they disobeyed them. Children, obey your parents as Christian children should. Honour your father and your mother for this is the first commandment to which a promise is attached that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth. Fathers. do not move your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and the admonition of the Lord. If the Christian faith did much for women, it did even more for children.
