_AND MOSES SAID UNTO THE LORD, SEE, THOU SAYEST UNTO ME, BRING UP THIS PEOPLE: AND THOU HAST NOT LET ME KNOW WHOM THOU WILT SEND WITH ME. Moses at this crisis found himself in difficult circumstances, being still invested with office as a divine legate; but, from the withdrawal of the cloudy pillar, at a loss how to proceed, he earnestly desired to be relieved from this state of painful uncertainty, by having a distinct assurance as to the rank or character of the guide under whose auspices he with his onerous charge was now placed-whether he was a created angel-which would have occasioned disappointment and sorrow; or whether He was the Angel Yahweh, who had hitherto conducted their journey-which would have inspired confidence and joy. 12._See, thou, sayest unto me, Bring up this people _Moses is still diligently engaged in endeavoring to reconcile the people, for the fuller promise was inserted by way of anticipation. Since the revolt, however, God had promised no more than that He would give the land to the people; but although wishing only to assure them that they should possess the land, He had added that His angel should lead them, still this was but a temporary blessing, and one which He is wont to confer promiscuously on other nations also. Thus Moses saw that he and the people were deprived of a special privilege which they had previously enjoyed; for that same angel who had gone before them was frequently called the God of hosts, in order that they might perceive that God was present with them in a peculiar manner. 12-23 Moses is very earnest with God. Thus, by the intercession of Christ, we are not only saved from ruin, but become entitled to everlasting happiness. Observe here how he pleads. We find grace in God's sight, if we find grace in our hearts to guide and quicken us in the way of our duty. Moses speaks as one who dreaded the thought of going forward without the Lord's presence. God's gracious promises, and mercy towards us, should not only encourage our faith, but also excite our fervency in prayer. Observe how he speeds. See, in a type, Christ's intercession, which he ever lives to make for all that come to God by him; and that it is not by any thing in those for whom he intercedes. Moses then entreats a sight of God's glory, and is heard in that also. A full discovery of the glory of God, would overwhelm even Moses himself. Man is mean, and unworthy of it; weak, and could not bear it;...

Verse Exodus 33:12. _MOSES SAID UNTO THE LORD_] We may suppose that after Moses had quitted the tabernacle he went to the camp, and gave the people some general information relative to the conversation he lately had with the Lord; after which he returned to the tabernacle or tent, and began to plead with God, as we find in this and the following verses. _THOU HAST NOT LET ME KNOW, C._] As God had said _he_ would not go up with this people, Moses wished to know _whom_ he would send with him, as he had only said, in general terms, that he would send an angel....

In Exodus 33:1 J, Yahweh's refusal to go up in the midst of Israel leads the people to put off their ornaments. In Exodus 33:5 f. follows from E Yahweh's order to put off ornaments and its execution. This may have been connected with the construction of the sacred Tent which is assumed as known in Exodus 33:7, the details being dropped in view of Exodus
