Ezekiel 10:4

Then the glory of the LORD went up from the cherub, and stood over the threshold of the house; and the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was full of the brightness of the LORD's glory. THE GLORY OF THE LORD WENT UP FROM THE CHERUB, AND STOOD OVER THE THRESHOLD OF THE HOUSE. Distinct from the departure of the glory of the Lord to the threshold from the cherub over the mercy-seat of the temple (). Here the cherub from which the glory of the Lord departs is the cherub seen by Ezekiel in his first vision, and which stood "on the right side of the house" (). In this verse the Prophet confirms what he lately touched upon, viz., that the temple was filled with blackness, because God had transferred his glory away. He says then, _that the brightness of God’s glory appeared above the threshold _But the glory of God resided in the sanctuary and in the very ark of the covenant; but now, when it advances to the threshold, it is just as if he should extinguish the splendor of his glory by which the temple was adorned, and transfer it elsewhere. But he says, _that the glory of Jehovah was elevated from its place: _these words signify change of place: God is everywhere said to dwell between the cherubim, and he wished to _be _called upon there; but now his glory is said to be removed elsewhere. Hence, therefore, it appears, that the temple was deprived of God’s presence, and was in some sense stripped of its furniture; for without God what remained? H...

1-7 The fire being taken from between the wheels, under the cherubim, ch. Ezekiel 1:13, seems to have signified the wrath of God to be executed upon Jerusalem. It intimated that the fire of Divine wrath, which kindles judgment upon a people, is just and holy; and in the great day, the earth, and all the works that are therein, will be burnt up....

Verse Ezekiel 10:4. _THE GLORY OF THE LORD WENT UP_] This is repeated from Ezekiel 9:3. _THE HOUSE WAS FILLED WITH THE CLOUD_] This is a fact similar to what occurred frequently at the _tabernacle_ in the wilderness, and in the _dedication of the temple_ by Solomon. What is mentioned here was the _Divine shechinah_, the symbolical representation of the majesty of God....

EXPOSITION EZEKIEL 10:1, EZEKIEL 10:2 THEN I LOOKED, etc. There follows on the work of judgment another theophany, like that of Ezekiel 1:15. In the "expanse," or firmament, like the "terrible crystal," there is seen as before the likeness of a sapphire throne (see Ezekiel 1:26, note). The form of THE MAN who is the manifestation of Jehovah is implied, though not named. It is he who speaks to the captain of the six ministers of vengeance, himself the seventh, and bids him go in beneath the "whirling wheels" that are beneath the cherub

THEN THE GLORY OF THE LORD WENT UP FROM THE CHERUB,.... Or, "cherubim"; those that were upon the mercy seat, between which the Shechinah or glorious majesty of God dwelt, in the most holy place: this is a token and intimation of the Lord's leaving of the temple; and a little before the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans, to which this vision chiefly, if not together, refers, a voice was heard in the temple, "let us go hence b:'' [AND STOOD] OVER THE THRESHOLD OF THE HOUSE; either of the holy of holies, from whence he was removing; or rather of the holy place, the court of the priests, the inward court, and so open to the outward court, and view of the people in it: AND THE HOUSE WAS FILLED WITH THE CLOUD; the temple, being forsaken of God, was filled with darkness; as an emblem of that blindness which is come upon the Jews, and will continue on them till the fulness of the Gentile...

Ezekiel 10:1. Once more the glory vision appears. The linen clothed man who had done the marking in the previous chapter is now executing judgment. Who is He? Evidently more than an angel. That he is a supernatural being is clear. He held the place of pre-eminence among the other angels (Ezekiel 9:2). This angel is the Angel of the Lord, the same who appeared to the patriarchs, to Moses, Joshua, Gideon, Manoah, and to others. It is the Son of God in the garb of an angel. In the same form he also appeared to Daniel on the banks of the river Hiddekel. “Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz. His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet

THE BURNING OF THE CITY. But the guilty city must be destroyed as well as the people: so the awful carnage is followed by a no less awful conflagration prophetic of the fire, kindled later by Babylonian hands, which reduced the city to ashes (2 Kings 25:9). But this fire was kindled by supernatural hands which took it from among the flames that flashed and blazed between the strange creatures in the Divine chariot (Ezekiel 1:13); and again (_cf._ Ezekiel 9:3) the ominous note is struck of the departure of Yahweh, confirmed by the loud whirr of the wings.
