Ezekiel 12:10

Say thou unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; This burden concerneth the prince in Jerusalem, and all the house of Israel that are among them. THIS BURDEN - i:e., weighty oracle [ masaa' (H4853)]. CONCERNETH THE PRINCE. The very man Zedekiah in whom they trust for safety is to be the chief sufferer CONCERNETH THE PRINCE. When God has delivered us, we must glorify him and edify others, by acknowledging our sins. Those who by afflictions are brought to this, are made to know that God is the Lord, and may help to bring others to know him....

Verse Ezekiel 12:10. _THIS BURDEN_] This prediction concerning the _prince_. By this I point out the capture, misery, and ruin of _Zedekiah_....

BURDEN - A word used to indicate a prediction of woe to be borne by some individual or people (Isaiah 13:1 note). Ezekiel, bearing his “stuff” on his shoulder was a sign of the weight of calamity coming upon king and people....

EXPOSITION EZEKIEL 12:1 THE WORD OF THE LORD, etc. This formula, so familiar in Isaiah and Jeremiah, appears for the first time in Ezekiel, but occurs repeatedly afterwards, especially in this chapter (verses 8, 17, 21, 26. and again Ezekiel 13:1; Ezekiel 14:2, _et al._)_. _The teaching by "the visions of God" ceases, and that of direct message or symbolic acts is resumed. In answer to their sneering question; or notwithstanding their stupidity and indolence, and in order to awaken them out of it: THIS BURDEN [CONCERNETH] THE PRINCE IN JERUSALEM; the present reigning prince in Jerusalem, King Zedekiah. The sense is, either that that burden of goods the prophet carried out on his shoulders had a regard to the king of Judah and his captivity, and was an emblem of it; or rather that the burden of prophecy, or that sorrowful calamity predicted by the above sign or type, had relation to that prince, and would be fulfilled in him; and so the Targum, "upon the prince is the burden of this prophecy;'' in like manner Jarchi interprets it of prophecy: AND ALL THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL WHICH [ARE] AMONG THEM; they were also concerned in it, and would be carried captive with their prince....

Ezekiel's message of doom has surely been made plain enough, but the rebellious house will not listen; for one thing, their confidence in the indestructibility of the monarchy and the throne made such a message incredible. Well then, if they will not hear, they must be made to see; and again, as before (4) Ezekiel incarnates his message. By his conduct, he becomes a prophetic sign. In the daytime, before the eyes of the people, he packs a few belongings together, such as an exile might take with him to the land for which he was destined; then, having thus stimulated their curiosity, he carries them on his shoulder in the dead of night through a hole which he had dug in the wall (apparently of his house).
