Thus saith the Lord GOD to Tyrus; Shall not the isles shake at the sound of thy fall, when the wounded cry, when the slaughter is made in the midst of thee? SHALL NOT THE ISLES SHAKE AT THE SOUND OF THY FALL? The impression is herein noticed which the overthrow of Tyre produced on other maritime nations and upon her own colonies, e.g., Utica, Carthage, and Tartessus or Tarshish in Spain. THE ISLES - maritime lands. Even mighty Carthage used to send a yearly offering to the temple of Hercules at Tyre; and the mother-city gave high priests to her colonies. Hence, the consternation at her fall felt in the widely-scattered dependencies, with which she was so closely connected by the ties of religion, as well as commercial contact. Every discovery of the fulfilment of a Scripture prophecy, is like a miracle to confirm our faith. All that is earthly is vanity and vexation. Those who now have the most established prosperity, will soon be out of sight and forgotten....

Verse Ezekiel 26:21. _YET SHALT THOU NEVER BE FOUND AGAIN_] This is literally true; there is not the smallest vestige of the _ancient Tyre_, that which was erected on the main land. Even the ground seems to have been washed away; and the new Tyre is in nearly a similar state. I think this prophecy must be extended to the whole duration of Tyre. If it now be found to be in the state here described, it is sufficient to show the truth of the prophecy. Ezekiel 26:1. A lengthy prophecy concerning Tyrus is found in this and in the Chapter s which follow. These great predictions have found a startling fulfilment. History confirms all that Ezekiel spoke should come to pass. In Ezekiel 26:1 we have the overthrow of the powerful city predicted. The city of Tyrus (which means rock) was partly built upon an island off the mainland in the Mediterranean Sea. It was an ancient Phoenician city and is mentioned in Scripture for the first time in Joshua 19:29, where it is called “the strong city.” It had a wonderful commerce, a description of which in its variety, we find in the twenty-seventh chapter.
