EXPOSITION EZEKIEL 32:1 IN THE TWELFTH YEAR, etc. March, B.C. 584, nineteen months attar the destruction of Jerusalem. The two sections of the chapter, Ezekiel 32:1 and Ezekiel 32:17, belong to the same year, and probably, though the date of the month is net given for the second, were written within a fortnight of each other. The thoughts of the prophet still dwell upon the downfall of Egypt, and he is stirred, as by a special inspiration, to write an elaborate "lamentation" over its departed greatness. ALL THE BRIGHT LIGHTS OF HEAVEN WILL I MAKE DARK OVER THEE,.... Or, "all the lights of the light" a; the rest of the luminaries of heaven; the other five planets, as Kimchi, besides the sun and moon: AND SET DARKNESS UPON THY LAND, SAITH THE LORD GOD; as there must needs be, the sun, moon, and stars, and all the lights of heaven, being darkened above: there seems to be an allusion to the thick darkness that was formerly over the land of Egypt; and this is a figure and representation of that darkness that shall be in the kingdom of the beast, or spiritual Egypt, yet to come; see Exodus 10:21. The Targum is, "tribulation as darkness shall cover thy land.'' a כל מאורי אור "omnia luminaria lucis", Pagninus, Montanus, Cocceius....

Ezekiel 31:1. Pharaoh's greatness is described in the first part of the chapter (Ezekiel 31:1). He is compared to the Assyrian, once so powerful and proud. The fall and desolation of the proud monarch under the picture of a tree follows in Ezekiel 31:10. THE DIRGE OVER PHARAOH. A dirge is now sung over Pharaoh, in which he is likened, as before (Ezekiel 29:3), to a crocodile brutal and turbulent; but Yahweh will catch him in His net, and hurl his huge dripping carcase over mountain and valley, to be devoured by beasts and birds. Pharaoh, the brilliant luminary (the figure changes here), shall be extinguished; and other nations, when they behold Egypt's fate, shall tremble at the thought that the like may happen to themselves. _bright lights_ Lit. luminaries of light. _upon thy land_ Possibly with LXX.: upon _the earth_. The extinction of the lights in heaven referred to in the previous clause suggests a more general darkness than one over Pharaoh's own land....
