Verse Ezekiel 43:7. _SON OF MAN, THE PLACE OF MY THRONE_] The _throne_ refers to his _majesty_; the _soles of his feet_, to his _condescension_ in _dwelling among men_. _WHERE I WILL DWELL IN THE MIDST OF THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL_] The _tabernacle_ and _temple_ were types of the _incarnation_ of _Jesus_ _Christ_: "Destroy THIS TEMPLE, and after three days I will raise it up; - but this he spake of the temple of his body;" John 2:19; John 2:21. And in THAT TEMPLE "dwelt all the fulness of the Godhead bodily." Into this _immaculate humanity_ did the _glory_ of the Supreme God enter; and thus, "God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself....

HE SAID - i. e., God “said.” Both the Septuagint and the Vulgate break this verse into two, so as to make the first half the solemn words of dedication. place a full stop after “forever;” the words mark the distinction between the new and the former sanctuary. AND HE SAID UNTO ME, SON OF MAN,.... A kind, usual, and singular appellation, given to this prophet: these are the words either of the man that stood by him, so the Arabic version; or of Jehovah, speaking out of the house to him: THE PLACE OF MY THRONE, AND THE PLACE OF THE SOLES OF MY FEET: that is, this house, the church of God, is the place where the throne of the Lord is set; where he rules and reigns; where he sets his feet, and is his resting place; even his, whose throne is the heaven, and the earth his footstool; here Christ, as King of saints, dwells, and here he walks and shows the glory of his majesty: WHERE I WILL DWELL IN THE MIDST OF THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL FOR EVER; not Carnal, but spiritual Israel; such as are Israelites indeed, or which the church will be full in the latter day, both Jews and Gentiles; and in the midst of these will Jehovah dwell, and grant his gracious...

The description of the Temple is fittingly followed by an account of Yahweh's solemn entry into it a passage which forms the real climax of the last section of the book, and is the counterpart to His equally solemn departure described in Ezekiel 10:18 ff. and Ezekiel 11:22 ff. Girt with splendour, He re-enters by the eastern gate through which He had departed, and from the midst of the Temple His voice rings mysteriously forth, declaring that there He will dwell for ever in the midst of Israel. But whereas, in the old days of the monarchy, palace and Temple had been contiguous, separated only by a wall, and the graves of the kings had defiled the Temple by their proximity to it, such profanations and defilements no less than every trace of idolatry must be absolutely removed; and _then_ Yahweh would dwell

The glory of Jehovah enters the house by the E. gate. The sound of his chariot was as the sound of many waters, and his glory lightened the earth (Ezekiel 43:1). The prophet hears one speaking to him from the house and saying that the defilements to which the house had been exposed through idolatries and the burial of kings near it shall henceforth cease (Ezekiel 43:6). The prophet is commanded to make known the fashion and ordinances of the house to the people (Ezekiel 43:10)....

SON OF MAN, THE PLACE— _Son of man, thou seest the place._ Houbigant. The prophet here refers to the promise formerly made in relation to the tabernacle and temple; alluding to Christ, in whom all the prophesies of the Old Testament are to have their final accomplishment. Zechariah prophesies of the Messiah, that he should _build the temple of the Lord, and bear the glory;_ that is to say, as the spiritual sense of these prophesies is explained in the New Testament, "He shall build the Christian church;" in him shall all the fulness of the Godhead dwell bodily, and reign; not in types and figures. Calmet explains the last phrase thus, "By adoring idols in my temple, and by burying their kings in my holy mountain." Others, by _carcases of their kings,_ understand the lifeless images which were erected to those dead monarchs, who were deified and worshipped....
