Verse Ezekiel 47:16. _HAMATH_] Emesa or Amesa, in Syria. - _Calmet_. _BEROTHAH_] Berytus, now Baruth or Beeroth, which David took from Hadarezer, king of Syria, 2 Samuel 8:8; but these things are very uncertain. _SIBRAIM_] Sabarim or Sepharvaim, according to the Syriac, between Hamath and Damascus. _HAZAR-HATTICON_] The middle Hazar; or _middle village_, as the _margin_. _HAURAN._] The city Aurana, and the district Auranitis, are in the north-east limit of the Holy Land....

“Berothah,” probably the same as “Berothai” (marginal reference), lay between Hamath and Damascus, as did “Sibraim.” “Hazar-hatticon” is probably, as in the margin, “the middle Hazar,” to distinguish it from Hazar-enan Ezekiel 47:17....

EXPOSITION As the first part of Ezekiel's vision (Ezekiel 40-43.) dealt with the temple, or "house," and the second (Ezekiel 44-47.) with the ritual, or "worship," so the third, which beans with the present chapter (Ezekiel 47:1; Ezekiel 48:1.), treats of the land, or "inheritance" setting forth first its relation to the temple (verses 1-12) and to outlying countries (verses 13-21), and secondly its division among the tribes, inclusive of the priests, Levites, sanctuary, prince, and city (Ezekiel 48:1), with a statement of the dimensions and gates of the last (verses 24-35). HAMATH, BEROTHAH, SIBRAIM,.... The line of the northern border should be drawn on by Hamath, the same with Antiochia in Syria, since called Epiphania, as Jerom observes, from Antiochus Epiphanies; and go on by Berothah, a city of Hadadezer king of Zobah, 2 Samuel 8:8, the same with the Barothena of Ptolemy q, placed by him in Syria; and from thence the line would be carried on to Sibraim, a city in Arabia Deserta: WHICH IS BETWEEN THE BORDER OF DAMASCUS; the chief city in Syria: and the border of Hamath; before mentioned. Calmet r imagines it to be that which Ishmael Abulfeda calls Hovvarin; which he says is a village of the country of Ems or Hamath, to the southeast of the city. BOUNDARIES OF THE LAND. The northern boundary was to run from a point on the Mediterranean a little north of Tyre eastward in the direction of Damascus, the eastern boundary would stretch along the sea of Galilee, the Jordan, and the Dead Sea to a point a little to the south, the southern boundary ran from this point west to the Mediterranean, which naturally constituted the western boundary. No land was included east of the Jordan. As Levi did not count (Ezekiel 44:28), the number twelve was made up by reckoning Joseph (Ezekiel 47:13) as two tribes Ephraim and Manasseh.
