Ezekiel 6:13

_THEN SHALL YE KNOW THAT I AM THE LORD, WHEN THEIR SLAIN MEN SHALL BE AMONG THEIR IDOLS ROUND ABOUT THEIR ALTARS, UPON EVERY HIGH HILL, IN ALL THE TOPS OF THE MOUNTAINS, AND UNDER EVERY GREEN TREE, AND UNDER EVERY THICK OAK, THE PLACE WHERE THEY DID OFFER SWEET SAVOUR TO ALL THEIR IDOLS._ No JFB commentary on this verse....

Now he again announces that they shall know what they have long neglected. But here a different knowledge from the former seems to be marked; for he has lately said that they should so remember as to be ashamed, and acknowledge that the slaughters predicted by the Prophets had not been in vain: but here he mentions nothing of this kind, but only speaks of that experimental knowledge which is common to the ungodly. And, in truth, this doctrine seems to be extended promiscuously to all the commonalty. Whom they had denied, by serving other gods; but now by those punishments their eyes would be opened to see, and be obliged to acknowledge, that there was no God but the Lord: WHEN THEIR SLAIN [MEN] SHALL BE AMONG THEIR IDOLS ROUND ABOUT THEIR ALTARS; as is threatened, Ezekiel 6:5; by which it will appear that the idols whom they worshipped could not save them; since they should fall just by them, round about the altars on which they sacrificed unto them; which idols were placed, and altars for their worship built, UPON EVERY HIGH HILL, IN ALL THE TOPS OF THE MOUNTAINS: mountains and high hills were usual places of idolatry among the Heathens, in which the Jews imitated them, and particularly Herodotus e says of the Persians, that, going up to the highest parts of mountains, they offered sacrifice to Jupiter; so

Ezekiel 6:1. The mountains of Israel are mentioned first, because they were the places where the people practiced idolatry; they were the high places so often mentioned in the historical books. (Read Leviticus 26:30 .) Hundreds of years before, Moses wrote these words; and now they were all to be fulfilled. But the Lord also promised that a remnant should be left. That remnant would acknowledge the evil they had done. “They shall loathe themselves for the evils which they have committed in all their abominations.” The words “because I am broken with their whorish heart” means literally translated, “When I shall have broken their whorish heart which has departed from Me.” No judgment which has ever come upon Israel made a complete end of the nation. The prospect of the awful destruction of the idolaters by sword, famine, and pestilence, moves Ezekiel to give vent to his feelings in gestures of triumphant scorn; far from pitying his sinful fellow-countrymen in the hour of their sore distress, rather does he rejoice in Yahweh's victory over them. (For _alas,_ Ezekiel 6:11, read _ha!_) And again comes the scornful reference to the impotent idols who could save neither the worshippers nor the sanctuaries nor the land from destruction, but desolation would reign across it all from the wilderness in the south to Riblah (as we should read for Diblah) on the Orontes in the far north, where, after the sack of Jerusalem, king Zedekiah was taken and blinded (2 Kings 25:7)....
