Ezekiel 7:8

Now will I shortly pour out my fury upon thee, and accomplish mine anger upon thee: and I will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense thee for all thine abominations. NOW ... I WILL JUDGE THEE ACCORDING TO THY WAYS, AND WILL RECOMPENSE UPON THEE ALL THINE ABOMINATIONS. AND MINE EYE SHALL NOT SPARE ... - repetition of Ezekiel 7:3, sadly expressive of accumulated woes by the monotonous sameness....

He repeats here almost the same words. We have explained the intention, namely, that the Israelites should be positively assured that God threatened not for the sake of frightening them, but because the execution of his wrath was prepared. _Now, _says he, _I will shortly pour out my indignation _He had said the day was at hand. This refers to the time; for it would be foolish to place together _I will shortly pour out my indignation, against thee, _and _I will fulfill my indignation against thee; _this _fulfilling _explains what he had formerly said concerning the end. For God had formerly executed his vengeance against the Israelites, but not completely. This completion, then, of God’s wrath prevails even as far as their ultimate destruction. Now I have explained those words — _I will judge thee according to thy ways, and I will put upon thee all thine abominations _...

1-15 The abruptness of this prophecy, and the many repetitions, show that the prophet was deeply affected by the prospect of these calamities. Such will the destruction of sinners be; for none can avoid it. Oh that the wickedness of the wicked might end before it bring them to an end! Trouble is to the impenitent only an evil, it hardens their hearts, and stirs up their corruptions; but there are those to whom it is sanctified by the grace of God, and made a means of much good. The day of real trouble is near, not a mere echo or rumour of troubles. Whatever are the fruits of God's judgments, our sin is the root of them. These judgments shall be universal. And God will be glorified in all. Now is the day of the Lord's patience and mercy, but the time of the sinner's trouble is at hand....

THE MORNING - Rather, “The conclusion:” a whole series (literally circle) of events is being brought to a close. Others render it: Fate. THE DAY OF TROUBLE ... - Or, The day is near; a tumult Zechariah 14:13, and not the echo of (or, shouting on) the mountains. The contrast is between the wild tumult of war and the joyous shouts of such as keep holiday. Ezekiel 7:10 ROD - Used here for tribe Exodus 31:2. The people of Judah have blossomed into proud luxuriance. In Ezekiel 7:11 it means the rod to punish wickedness.

EXPOSITION EZEKIEL 7:1 The absence of any fresh date, and the fact that it is simply tacked on to the previous chapter by the copulative conjunction, shows that what follows belongs to the same group. The use of the phrase, THE WORD OF THE LORD CAME UNTO ME, shows, however, that there was an interval of silence, perhaps of meditation, followed by a fresh influx of inspiration; and, so far as we may judge from the more lyrical character of the chapter, a more intense emotion. NOW WILL I SHORTLY POUR OUT MY FURY UPON THEE,.... It might be very well said to be shortly, or near at hand, that the Lord would bring down his judgments upon this people; since it was some time in the sixth year of King Jehoiachin's captivity that this prophecy was delivered; and it was in the ninth year that Nebuchadnezzar came up against Jerusalem; so that it was but about three years before God would begin to pour out his fury on them: AND ACCOMPLISH MINE ANGER UPON THEE; not only send it, and begin to express it, but go on to finish it, till he had spent all his fury upon them he meant and threatened, and their sins deserved: AND I WILL JUDGE THEE ACCORDING TO THY WAYS, AND I WILL RECOMPENSE THEE FOR ALL THINE ABOMINATIONS; which is repeated from Ezekiel 7:3, for the confirmation of it, and to show the certainty of it, that nothing would prevent it.

Ezekiel 7:1. This chapter closes the first great message of Ezekiel. This great judgment message is written in beautiful language, which, in the Authorized Version, is marred by numerous incorrect renderings. The reader will find a reliable metrical translation in our larger commentary on Ezekiel. First, the end is announced to come upon the entire land; it could no longer be averted. The visions of doom, so vividly described in the three preceding Chapter s, reach their climax in this chapter, charged with emotion and palpitating with the sense of the approaching end. That end was yet more than four years off, but already Ezekiel sees it in all its horror that day of the pitiless anger of Yahweh, who by His terrors would teach His wicked and idolatrous people who and what He was....
