Ezekiel 8:18

Therefore will I also deal in fury: mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: and though they cry in mine ears with a loud voice, yet will I not hear them. THOUGH THEY CRY IN MINE EARS WITH A LOUD VOICE, YET WILL I NOT HEAR - (, "Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me;" ). Remarks: (1) In this chapter Ezekiel is shown in a vision the abominations on account of which God is about to forsake His own temple, and to give it and the city of Jerusalem to destruction (Ezekiel 8:17). The prophet is permitted to see, with his own eyes, "the image" which provoked God's holy "jealousy," at the door of the inner temple...

This seems to me a confirmation of the last clause. For he had said, that they sent forth their boughs or east them forth, but yet to their destruction. He now repeats the same thing in other words. _Therefore I will also act _in, my turn — that is, as they now boldly increase their superstitions, and so continually provoke _me, at length I will act, _says he. There is a tacit contrast, since God forsooth had ceased for a long time, because there is a certain form of rest when he ceases from his judgments: God seems to rest when he does not _take vengeance _on man’s wickedness, when he indulges them and passes them by for a time. Since, therefore, he had so suspended his judgments against the Jews, he seemed to cultivate ease in heaven: with this view he says, _that he would do it in his anger, _and he adds, that his vengeance would be so dreadful that there would be no place for pity. 13-18 The yearly lamenting for Tammuz was attended with infamous practices; and the worshippers of the sun here described, are supposed to have been priests. The Lord appeals to the prophet concerning the heinousness of the crime; "and lo, they put the branch to their nose," denoting some custom used by idolaters in honour of the idols they served. The more we examine human nature and our own hearts, the more abominations we shall discover; and the longer the believer searches himself, the more he will humble himself before God, and the more will he value the fountain open for sin, and seek to wash therein....

EXPOSITION EZEKIEL 8:1 AND IT CAME TO PASS, etc. We begin with a fresh date. One year and one month had passed since the vision of Chebar, and had been occupied partly by the acted, partly by the spoken, prophecies of the preceding chapters. In the mean time, things had gone from bad to worse in Jerusalem. In the absence of the higher priests, idolatry was more rampant, and had found its way even into the temple. THEREFORE WILL I ALSO DEAL IN FURY,.... Being provoked by such abominable idolatries, and such horrid insolence, and most contemptuous treatment: MINE EYE SHALL NOT SPARE: NEITHER WILL I HAVE PITY: see Ezekiel 5:11; AND THOUGH THEY CRY IN MINE EARS WITH A LOUD VOICE; very pressingly and earnestly for help, being in great distress: [YET] WILL I NOT HEAR THEM; as they turned their backs on him, he will turn a deaf ear to them, and not regard their cries. These abominations will assuredly bring down the unsparing chastisements of heaven. The phrase "shall not spare nor pity" is common in the prophet, ch. C. The Announcement of Judgment 8:17-18 TRANSLATION (17) And He said unto me, Have you seen, son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they are doing abominations which they have done here? for they have filled the land with violence and they have provoked Me still more, and behold they are putting the branch to their nose. (18) Therefore also I will deal with them in fury; My eye will not have compassion nor will I take pity; when they cry in My ears with a loud voice I will not hear them. COMMENTS Judah was ripe for judgment. The abominations practiced throughout the land were viewed by most as _a light thing._ But to the Lord they were a provocation. _Do you see this, son of man?_ suggests that Ezekiel was a little uncertain in his own mind as to the necessity of the judgment which he had been preaching (cf. Jeremiah 5:1-3).

§ 3. A VISION OF JERUSALEM'S SIN AND DOOM (EZEKIEL 8-11) Date, August-September, 591 b.c. A year and two months after his call to be a prophet, Ezekiel was visited in his house by the elders of the Jewish colony at Tel-abib, and in their presence he fell into a trance, during which he was transported in spirit to Jerusalem, and witnessed, as in a dream, a remarkable drama being enacted there. The glory of God was present during this vision in the same symbolic form, and accompanied by the same living chariot, as in Ezekiel 1, but with this difference, that it sometimes left the chariot and took up its position elsewhere.
