And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation. THE OTHER, [ hoi (G3588) loipoi (G3062)] - 'the rest.' JEWS - Jewish Christians. DISSEMBLED LIKEWISE, [ sunupekritheesan (G4942)] - 'joined in hypocrisy;' namely, in living as though the law were necessary to perfect justification, through fear of man, though they knew from God their Christian liberty of eating with Gentiles, and had availed themselves of it (Acts 11:2); yea. "rejoiced" ...

11-14 Notwithstanding Peter's character, yet, when Paul saw him acting so as to hurt the truth of the gospel and the peace of the church, he was not afraid to reprove him. When he saw that Peter and the others did not live up to that principle which the gospel taught, and which they professed, namely, That by the death of Christ the partition wall between Jew and Gentile was taken down, and the observance of the law of Moses was no longer in force; as Peter's offence was public, he publicly reproved him. There is a very great difference between the prudence of St. Paul, who bore with, and used for a time, the ceremonies of the law as not sinful, and the timid conduct of St. Peter, who, by withdrawing from the Gentiles, led others to think that these ceremonies were necessary....

Verse 13. _AND THE OTHER JEWS DISSEMBLED LIKEWISE_] That is: Those who were converted to Christianity from among the _Jews_, and who had also been convinced that the obligation of the Jewish ritual had ceased, seeing Peter act this part, and also _fearing_ _them that were of the circumcision_, they separated themselves from the converted Gentiles, and acted so as to convince the Jews that _they_ still believed the law to be of moral obligation; and so powerful was the torrent of such an example, that the gentle, loving-hearted _Barnabas was carried away by their dissimulation_, αυτωντηυποκρισει, _with their hypocrisy_-feigning to be what they really were not....

AND THE OTHER JEWS - That is, those who had been converted to Christianity. It is probable that they were induced to do it by the example of Peter, as they would naturally regard him as a leader. DISSEMBLED LIKEWISE WITH HIM - Dissembled or concealed their true sentiments. That is, they attempted to conceal from those who had come down from James the fact that they had been in the habit of associating with the Gentiles, and of eating with them. From this it would appear that they intended to conceal this wholly from them, and that they withdrew from the Gentiles before anything had been said to them by those who came down from James. EXPOSITION In the preceding chapter, St. Paul has been concerned to make clear the position that neither the gospel which he preached nor the commission which he held was derived from the older apostles- the history of the first years of his ministry showed this. The apostle is now addressing himself to a different subject; he wishes to show that his gospel, though not derived from the older apostles, had, however, while recognized as standing on an independent footing, received the sanction of their approval. This being his object, he had no occasion to refer in any way to visits which he may have made to Jerusalem between the one mentioned in Galatians 1:18 and the one here referred to. CHAPTER 2 _ 1. How Jerusalem had Confirmed the Gospel Paul Preached. (Galatians 2:1)_ 2. Peter's Failure; Paul's Rebuke and Testimony. Excitement and consequent confusion rise higher still. In one sense, these verses record a climax; Paul is not merely Peter's equal he had exposed him once when Peter was plainly in the wrong. There is no ground for doubting that the order of time is followed. After the Jerusalem compact, Peter finds himself at Antioch (on a missionary tour? _cf._ 1 Corinthians 9:5). If Titus _had_ been an outsider at Jerusalem, the tables are now turned, and Peter is the outsider. Following the dictates of his generous and impulsive heart, he comes inside. (One could not share communion in an apostolic church without joining in a solid meal.)
