Verse 22. _BUT THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT_] Both _flesh_-the sinful dispositions of the human heart and _spirit_-the changed or purified state of the soul, by the grace and Spirit of God, are represented by the apostle as _trees_, one yielding _good_ the other _bad fruit_; the productions of each being according to the nature of the _tree_, as the _tree_ is according to the nature of the _seed_ from which it sprung. BUT THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT - That which the Holy Spirit produces. It is not without design, evidently, that the apostle uses the word “Spirit” here, as denoting that these things do not flow from our own nature. The vices above enumerated are the proper “works” or result of the operations of the human heart; the virtues which he enumerates are produced by a foreign influence - the agency of the Holy Spirit. Hence, Paul does not trace them to our own hearts, even when renewed. He says that they are to be regarded as the proper result of the Spirit’s operations on the soul. EXPOSITION GALATIANS 5:1 GALATIANS 5:2 BEHOLD, I PAUL SAY UNTO YOU (ἴδε, ἐγὼ Παῦλος λώγω ὑμῖν); _lo_,_ I Paul say unto you. _The adverbial exclamation ἴδε, found in St. Paul's writings only here (in Romans 2:17 it should be εἰ δὲ), seems to be more abrupt than ἰδού, pointing to the immense importance and yet possibly unexpected character of what follows.
