_AND JACOB CAME TO SHALEM, A CITY OF SHECHEM, WHICH IS IN THE LAND OF CANAAN, WHEN HE CAME FROM PADAN-ARAM; AND PITCHED HIS TENT BEFORE THE CITY._ Shalem - i:e., peace; and the meaning may be that Jacob came into Canaan, arriving 'safe, prosperous, unharmed' (Gesenius), in fulfillment of the promise (Genesis 28:15; Genesis 28:2 l), at the city Shechem. But most writers, following the Septuagint, take Shalom as a proper name-a city of (prince) Shechem (cf. Genesis 34:1-31; Judges 9:28), and the site to be marked by one of the little villages about two miles to the northeast, in the rich fertile plain or wady of El Mukh

17-20 Jacob did not content himself with words of thanks for God's favour to him, but gave real thanks. Also he kept up religion, and the worship of God in his family. Where we have a tent, God must have an altar. Jacob dedicated this altar to the honour of El-elohe-Israel, God, the God of Israel; to the honour of God, the only living and true God; and to the honour of the God of Israel, as a God in covenant with him. Israel's God is Israel's glory. Blessed be his name, he is still the mighty God, the God of Israel. Verse Genesis 33:18. _AND JACOB CAME TO SHALEM, A CITY OF SHECHEM_] The word שלם _shalem_, in the Samaritan שלום _shalom_, should be translated here _in peace_, or _in safety_. After resting some time at Succoth, which was necessary for the safety of his flocks and the comfort of his family, he got safely to a city of Shechem, in health of body, without any loss of his cattle or servants, his wives and children being also in safety. _Coverdale_ and _Matthews_ translate this word as above, and with them agree the _Chaldee_ and the _Arabic_: it is not likely to have been the name of a city, as it is nowhere else to be found. Jacob at Shechem 18. _in peace_ R.V. marg. _to Shalem, a city of_. The rendering in the margin is possible. It is supported by LXX and Vulg. There is a village, _Salim_, still to be found near Shechem. On the other hand, the context speaks of Jacob "before the city" of Shechem; and the fact of his arrival there "in peace" is not without significance in view of the events narrated in ch. 34. _Canaan … Paddan-aram_ The transition in this verse is abrupt. Jacob is suddenly transferred from the east to the west side of the Jordan. The clause, "when he came from Paddan-aram," seems to ignore the previous Chapter s, and is clearly taken from a different source, viz. P. _before the city_ "In front of it," lit. "in the presence of the city" of Shechem. It is the preposition rendered "before" in Genesis 19:13....

CAME TO SHALEM, &C.— Onkelos and the Arabic version render this, _He came in peace and safety to the city Shalem,_ &c. Mr. Chais has it, _sain et sauf;_ and this, perhaps, is the best translation; informing us, that after Jacob had left Padan-aram, he arrived _in health and peace, and without accidents through his journey,_ at the _city of Shalem,_ &c. The sacred writer does not inform us when he arrived there, or whither he went during the time his family stayed at Succoth; he mentions the present fact only to introduce what follows in the next chapter, which properly should have been connected with this....
