_AND THEY CAME TO THE THRESHINGFLOOR OF ATAD, WHICH IS BEYOND JORDAN, AND THERE THEY MOURNED WITH A GREAT AND VERY SORE LAMENTATION: AND HE MADE A MOURNING FOR HIS FATHER SEVEN DAYS._ They came to the threshing-floor of Atad. "Atad" may be taken as a common noun, signifying 'the plain of the thorn bushes.' It was on the border between Egypt and Canaan; and as the last opportunity of indulging grief was always the most violent, the Egyptians made a prolonged halt at this spot, while the family of Jacob proceeded by themselves to the place of sepulture. 'The route taken by Jacob's funeral precession was evidently along the usual caravan road between the Delta and Hebron.' Some have thought, from the expression "beyond Jordan" being applied to Atad, or Abel-mizraim (that is, mourning of the Egyptians), that they crossed the river. Verse Genesis 50:10. _THE THRESHING-FLOOR OF ATAD_] As אטד _atad_ signifies a _bramble_ or _thorn_, it has been understood by the Arabic, not as a _man's_ name, but as the name of a _place_; but all the other _versions_ and the _Targums_ consider it as the name of a _man_. Threshing-floors were always in a field, in the open air; and _Atad_ was probably what we would call a _great farmer_ or _chief_ of some _clan_ or _tribe_ in that place. Jerome supposed the place to have been about _two leagues from Jericho_; but we have no certain information on this point.
