_AND THE ARK RESTED IN THE SEVENTH MONTH, ON THE SEVENTEENTH DAY OF THE MONTH, UPON THE MOUNTAINS OF ARARAT._ Seventh month - of the year (cf. Genesis 7:11) - not of the flood, which lasted only five months, thirty days in a month. This computation, which seems to have prevailed in Noah's time, since the sacred narrative was probably derived from some Noachic document, is the same as the unintercalated solar year of the Egyptians; and its adoption here by Moses is remarkable, as the lunar year, consisting of twelve months, which began with the appearance of the new moon, and varied in length, was the mode of reckoning used by the early Hebrews. God has times and places of rest for his people after their tossing; and many times he provides for their seasonable and comfortable settlement, without their own contrivance, and quite beyond their own foresight. Verse Genesis 8:4. _THE MOUNTAINS OF ARARAT._] That Ararat was a mountain of _Armenia_ is almost universally agreed. What is commonly thought to be the Ararat of the Scriptures, has been visited by many travellers, and on it there are several monasteries. For a long time the world has been amused with reports that the _remains_ of the ark were still visible there; but Mr. _Tournefort_, a famous French naturalist, who was on the spot, assures us that nothing of the kind is there to be seen. As there is a great chain of mountains which are called by this name, it is impossible to determine on what part of them the ark rested; but the highest part, called by some the _finger mountain_, has been fixed on as the most likely place. The mention of the rain (Genesis 8:2_ b_) comes from J, and since Genesis 8:3_ b_ with its dating belongs to P, Genesis 8:3_ a_ may be assigned to J. With Genesis 8:6 we resume J's story; after the forty days-' rain, he means, Noah sends forth a raven. This went to and fro till the waters abated, because being an unclean carrion bird it could alight on the floating trees or corpses and eat the latter. Then after seven days (as may be inferred from yet other seven days in Genesis 8:10) he sent forth a dove, but since it found no foothold to rest on, it quickly returned
