They did not say that they would not build a temple, but, Not yet. Thus men do not say they will never repent and reform, and be religious, but, Not yet. There is a proneness in us to think wrongly of discouragements in our duty, as if they were a discharge from our duty, when they are only for the trial of our courage and faith. This is a second prophecy, distinct from the former; that was delivered to the two governors, setting forth the sentiments and language of the people concerning the building of the temple, which was left with them to consider how just it was; but this is sent to the people themselves, expostulating with them about the folly and ingratitude of it: SAYING; as follows:...

The subject is the building of the second temple. The people had been busily employed in building their own houses some of them had gone to great expense and much labour upon these houses, but they had not built the temple of God. The prophet Haggai was sent to incite them to holy labour. Greed caused the people to push God down to a place of lesser importance in their life. They were concerned only about getting more. They would wait and build God's Temple later. We must have a correct attitude toward our possessions. It is easy to do what is wrong, but it is just as easy to do what is right. It is just a matter of choice. We must take care not to put our own interest before God. Think of what could be accomplished for God if we would give generously instead of using what we have selfishly.
