Verse Hebrews 6:20. _WHITHER THE FORERUNNER_] The word προδρομος, _prodromos_, does not merely signify one that _goes_ or _runs before_ another, but also one who _shows the way, he who first does a_ _particular thing_; also the _first fruits_. So in the _Septuagint_, Isaiah 28:4, προδρομος συκου signifies the _first fruits of the fig tree_, or the _first ripe figs_. To this meaning of the word _Pliny_ refers, _Hist. WHITHER - To which most holy place - heaven. THE FORERUNNER - The word used here occurs nowhere else in the New Testament. A “forerunner” - πρόδρομος prodromos - is one who goes before others to prepare the way. The word is applied to light troops sent forward as scouts; Diod. Sic. 17, 17; compare “Wisdom of Solomon” (apoc) 12:8. “Thou didst send wasps, forerunners of thy host, to destroy them by little and little.” The meaning here is, that Jesus went first into the heavenly sanctuary. In the previous chapter, Paul was writing to some who ought to have been teachers, but who needed still to be taught the first principles of the gospel; they were such babes in grace that they needed the milk of the Word, the very simplest elements of gospel truth, and not the strong meat of solid doctrine. The mention of God's promise suggests the thought that it is absolutely sure, so that we may hold to it without misgiving. When God made His promise to Abraham He sealed it by an oath. Just as in human affairs men are bound to a decision when they have passed their oath, and so called on some higher power to witness (Hebrews 6:16), so God swore by _Himself,_ since He was Himself the supreme power. His gracious will was thus confirmed by the twofold bond of His oath and His promise (Hebrews 6:17 f.).
