Verse 24. _BUT THIS_] οδε, _But he_, that is, Christ, _because_ _he continueth ever_ i s eternal, _hath an unchangeable priesthood_, απαραβατον ιερωσυνην, a _priesthood that passeth not away_ from him; he lives for ever, and he lives a _priest_ for ever....

BUT THIS MAN - Greek “But he” - referring to Christ. BECAUSE HE CONTINUETH EVER - Greek “Because he remains forever.” The idea is because he does not die, but ever lives, he has an unchanging priesthood. There is no necessity that he should yield it to others, as was the case with the Jewish priests because they were mortal. The reason in their case, why it passed to others, was not that they did not perform the office well, but that they were mortal, and could not continue to hold it. But this reason could not operate in the case of the Lord Jesus, and therefore his priesthood would be permanent. HATH AN UNCHANGEABLE PRIESTHOOD - Margin, “or, “which passeth not from one to another.” The margin expresses the sense of the passage. THE MELCHIZEDEK PRIESTHOOD OF CHRIST. It is shown that Scripture itself makes reference to a type of priesthood which is quite distinct from the Levitical. The nature of this priesthood is set forth (Hebrews 7:1) in terms of the description given in Genesis 14 of the priest Melchizedek. That some peculiar significance attached to him may be inferred from his name, and the name of his city. Still more suggestive is the fact that nothing is said as to his parentage, or his descent, or his birth and death. He was not one of a family of priests, but stands solitary, a priest in his own right, who never assumed and never lost his office. In all his attributes he comes before us as an earthly type of the Son of God (Hebrews 7:1)....

A PRIEST AFTER THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK (Hebrews 7:1-28) We come now to a passage of such paramount importance for the writer to the Hebrews and in itself so difficult to understand that we must deal with it in a special way. Hebrews 6:1-20, (Hebrews 6:20), ended with the statement that Jesus had been made a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
