2._Of the sanctuary, _or, literally, _of holy things, etc. _The word is to be taken, as being in the neuter gender; and the Apostle explains himself by saying, _of the true tabernacle. _(128) But it may be asked, whether the tabernacle built by Moses was a false one, and presumptuously constructed, for there is an implied contrast in the words? To this I answer, that to us mentioned here is not set in opposition to what is false, but only to what is typical; as we find in John 1:17, “The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” Then the old tabernacle was not the empty inventions of man, but the effigy of the heavenly tabernacle. 1-6 The substance, or summary, of what had been declared was, that Christians had such a High Priest as they needed. He took upon himself human nature, appeared on earth, and there gave himself as a sacrifice to God for the sins of his people. We must not dare to approach God, or to present any thing to him, but in and through Christ, depending upon his merits and mediation; for we are accepted only in the Beloved. In all obedience and worship, we should keep close to God's word, which is the only and perfect standard. Christ is the substance and end of the law of righteousness. But the covenant here referred to, was that made with Israel as a nation, securing temporal benefits to them. The promises of all spiritual blessings, and of eternal life, revealed in the gospel, and made sure through Christ, are of infinitely greater value. Verse Hebrews 8:2. _A MINISTER OF THE SANCTUARY_] των αγιων λειτουργος. _A public minister of the holy things_ or _places_. The word λειτουργος, from λειτος, _public_, and εργον, a _work_ or _office_, means a person who officiated for the public, a public officer; in whom, and his work, all the people had a common right: hence our word _liturgy_, the _public work_ of prayer and praise, designed for the _people at large_; all having a right to attend it, and each having an equal interest in it. Properly speaking, the Jewish priest was the servant of the public; he transacted the business of the people with God. A MINISTER OF THE SANCTUARY - Margin, “or holy things.” Greek τῶν ἁγίων tōn hagiōn. The greatness of the High Priest has now been sufficiently proved, and the writer proceeds to demonstrate the _greatness of His ministry._ This section constitutes the heart of the epistle, as we are expressly told in the opening verse. The pith of what we are saying is this--it is just such a high priest we possess, a priest who has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of majesty in the heavens, a high priest who is a minister of the sanctuary and of the real tabernacle, which the Lord, and not man, founded.
