Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God. YET THE NUMBER OF THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL SHALL BE AS THE SAND OF THE SEA, WHICH CANNOT BE ... NUMBERED. 8-11 The rejection of Israel for a time, is signified by the name of another child: call him Lo-ammi, "not my people." The Lord disowns all relation to them. We love him, because he first loved us; but our being cast out of covenant, is owing to ourselves and our folly. Mercy is remembered in the midst of wrath; the rejection, as it shall not be total, so it shall not be final. The same hand that wounded, is stretched forth to heal. Very precious promises are here given concerning the Israel of God, and they may be of use to us now. Verse Hosea 1:10. _YET THE NUMBER OF THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL_] God had promised that the children of Israel should be as the sand of the sea. See Genesis 32:12; Romans 9:25. And though for their iniquities he had thinned and scattered them, yet the spirit and design of his promise and covenant shall be fulfilled. An Israel there shall be. EXPOSITION HOSEA 1:1 THE WORD OF THE LORD THAT CAME UNTO HOSEA, THE SON OF BEERI. The prophets are divided into the former (_rishonim, _Zechariah 1:4) prophets and the later prophets. The writings of the former prophets comprise most of the historical hooks, for the Hebrew conception of a prophet was that of an individual inspired by God to instruct men for the present or inform them of the future, whether orally or by writing; the _later _were the prophets properly so called, while these, again, are subdivided into the _greater, _consisting of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel, and the _lesser, _or minor, including the remaining twelve. ISRAEL "Israel" in Hosea means the ten tribes forming the northern kingdom as distinguished from "Judah" (the tribes of Judah and Benjamin) forming the southern kingdom which adhered to the Davidic family. (See (1 Kings 12:1). The promise of verse 10 (Hosea 1:10) awaits fulfilment. See "Israel"; (Genesis 12:2); (Genesis 12:3); (Romans 11:26)....

HOSEA 1:10; HOSEA 1:1 (= Hebrews 2:1). A PROMISE OF RESTORATION. The children of Israel are destined to be increased in numbers indefinitely, and instead of being called (Hosea 1:10 _mg.)_ Ye are not my people they shall be called children of the living God. Judæ ans and Israelites shall assemble, and under one head go up victoriously from the land (see below), and on the same battlefield (Jezreel), which has witnessed the utter defeat of present-day Israel, shall enjoy a glorious triumph. Then the ominous names, Lo-ammi (not my people) and Lo-ruhamah (uncompassionated) shall be reversed....
