10._Yet the defenced city shall be desolate _Here the copulative ו (_vau_) is generally supposed to mean _for_, and some take it for _otherwise_. There will thus be a twofold interpretation; for if we translate it _because_, the Prophet will assign a reason for the former statement, but that exposition is rejected by the context, and is altogether absurd. With greater plausibility it is taken for _otherwise_; for this threatening might be appropriately introduced, “If you do not repent, you see what awaits you, the defenced city shall be like a wilderness.” But I consider that exposition to be a departure from the natural meaning, and therefore I choose rather to take it as signifying _nevertheless _or _yet _ The Prophet means that Jerusalem and the other cities of Judea must “nevertheless” be destroyed, and that, although the Lord wishes to spare his people, it is imp

YET THE DEFENSED CITY - Gesenius supposes that this means Jerusalem. So Calvin and Piscator understand it. Others understand it of Samaria, others of Babylon (as Vitringa, Rosenmuller, and Grotius), and others of cities in general, denoting those in Judea, or in other places. To me it seems plain that Babylon is referred to. The whole description seems to require this; and especially the fact that this song is supposed to be sung after the return from captivity to celebrate their deliverance. It is natural, therefore, that they should record the fact that the strong and mighty city where they had been so long in captivity, was now completely destroyed. ISRAEL'S GENTLE CHASTISEMENT AND THE TERMS ON WHICH IT MAY BE PARDONED. This is an insertion out of connexion with the context, and it does not itself hang well together. The writer asks, Has Yahweh punished Israel as severely as He has punished Israel's oppressors? No, for Israel's oppressors have been slain, while Israel has been simply driven forth into exile. Israel's guilt may be removed on condition that false worship is given up. The city is deserted, the calf pastures on its site, and there the women collect their firewood, for its people are without knowledge of God, and He will have no mercy upon them. ISAIAH 27:8. IN MEASURE: the meaning is quite uncertain (_mg.),_ the explanations offered quite improbable. EAST WIND: the sirocco, stifling and violent. It is vividly described in the opening Chapter s of E. F.
