Isaiah 34:2

For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter. HE HATH UTTERLY DESTROYED THEM - rather, doomed them to an utter curse; Hebrew, hechªriymaam (H2763) (Horsley). HE HATH DELIVERED THEM - appointed them TO THE SLAUGHTER....

2._For the indignation of Jehovah is on all the nations. _He undoubtedly means “the nations” which were hostile to the Jews, and at the same time were contiguous to them; for, being surrounded on all sides by various nations, they had almost as many enemies as neighbors. Though this hatred arose from other causes, such as envy, yet the diversity of religion very greatly inflamed their rage, for they were exceedingly offended at having their superstitions condemned. So much stronger was the reason why God proraised that he would be a judge and avenger. _On all their army. _This is added because the Jews were few in number when compared with the rest of the nations. 1-8 Here is a prophecy of the wars of the Lord, all which are both righteous and successful. All nations are concerned. And as they have all had the benefit of his patience, so all must expect to feel his resentment. The description of bloodshed suggests tremendous ideas of the Divine judgments. Idumea here denotes the nations at enmity with the church; also the kingdom of antichrist. Our thoughts cannot reach the horrors of that awful season, to those found opposing the church of Christ. There is a time fixed in the Divine counsels for the deliverance of the church, and the destruction of her enemies. We must patiently wait till then, and judge nothing before the time. Through Christ, mercy is exercised to every believer, consistently with justice, and his name is glorified....

FOR THE INDIGNATION OF THE LORD - Yahweh is about to express his wrath against all the nations which are opposed to his people. HE HATH UTTERLY DESTROYED THEM - In his purpose, or intention. The prophet represents this as so certain that it may be exhibited as already done....

FOR THE INDIGNATION OF THE LORD [IS] UPON ALL NATIONS,.... All the nations of the earth, which have committed fornication with the whore of Rome, or have given in to her false worship, superstition, and idolatry; which is the reason of God's wrath and indignation against them, and of such severe punishment being inflicted on them; see Revelation 18:3: AND [HIS] FURY UPON ALL THEIR ARMIES; the armies of the kings of the earth, gathered together at Armageddon, to make war with Christ, and those that follow him; see Revelation 16:14: HE HATH UTTERLY DESTROYED THEM; not only devoted them to destruction, but actually destroyed them, with "Cherem", an utter destruction; one of the words of which Armageddon is compounded, and so points at the place,

CHAPTER 34 The Day of Jehovah 1. _Addressed to the world: Jews and Gentiles involved (Isaiah 34:1)_ 2. _The shaking of the earth and the heavens (Isaiah 34:2)_ 3. _The day of vengeance (Isaiah 34:9)_ This is one of the darkest Chapter s in the Bible. A worldwide judgment is described such as has never taken place in the history of the world. The indignation of the Lord is then upon all nations and upon their armies. Like chapter 33, it tells of the great judgments to come....

All nations are summoned to hear their doom. Yahweh is infuriated against them, He has pronounced the ban (pp. 99, 114, Deuteronomy 2:34 *, Joshua 6:17 *) upon them. The foul odour of their exposed and putrefying corpses shall fill the air, the mountains be dissolved with their blood. The sky shall be rolled up like a scroll, and the stars drop off it (Revelation 6:13 f.) like a fading leaf from the vine or fig-tree. ISAIAH 34:4. A Prophecy of Vengeance on Edom, and the future blessedness of Israel The oracle consists of two sharply contrasted eschatological pictures, one of judgment, the other of redemption. i. The first (ch. 34) commences with a lurid description of the terrors of the last judgment, which is a universal judgment on the nations of the world (Isaiah 34:1). But this passes abruptly (Isaiah 34:5) into a threat of special and fearful vengeance on Edom for its implacable hostility to the people of God (Isaiah 34:8). An indiscriminate slaughter of its population is decreed (5 8); and the land shall be turned into a perpetual desolation, haunted by desert beasts and creatures of demon kind (9 17)....
