The Lord GOD which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith, Yet will I gather others to him, beside those that are gathered unto him. 8._The Lord Jehovah saith. _Isaiah again confirms what he formerly testified as to the restoration of the people; for although he extolled in lofty terms the grace of God, by which he would deliver his people, yet the condition of the Church was such that promises of this kind appeared to be ridiculous. Such repetitions, therefore, are not superfluous, but were necessarily added in order to strengthen feeble minds, that they might be fully convinced of that which was otherwise incredible. _Who gathereth the outcasts of Israel. _It is with reference to the subject in hand that he bestows on God this title; for it belongs to him to gather a scattered church, and the same words, “he gathereth the outcasts of Israel,” are used here in the same sense. THE LORD GOD - This verse is a continuation of the promise made in the previous verses, that those of other nations would be united to the ancient people of God. The sense is, that Yahweh would not only gather back to their country those who were scattered abroad in other lands, but would also call to the same privileges multitudes of those who were now aliens and strangers. CHAPTER 56 Salvation Enjoyed by the Strangers and Eunuchs 1. _Strangers and servants joined unto the Lord to serve Him and to love the Name of the Lord (Isaiah 56:1) _ The first eight verses of this chapter stand by themselves. Strangers to the commonwealth of Israel and eunuchs are gathered in. It is the result of the gracious invitation of the preceding chapter and that again is the result of the work of the Servant of Jehovah and His vicarious suffering. While these verses look forward to the kingdom we have in them a hint of what God does now in gathering strangers. ISAIAH 56:1_._ A GRACIOUS PROMISE TO PROSELYTES AND EUNUCHS. We find ourselves conscious in this oracle of a change of atmosphere and setting. The Temple is built, and the centre of an elaborate ritual. Refraining from evil and sabbath-keeping are equally yoked. We pass now to the oracles of Trito-Isaiah. An exhortation to hold fast the ordinances of religion (judgement), based upon the imminence of Yahweh's vindicating intervention (my righteousness), is followed by a beatitude upon the man who obeys it. Let not the foreigner fear exclusion from the chosen people (separate is a technical term meaning to excommunicate), nor the eunuch, because he can have no posterity, refrain from joining them. _The Lord God … saith_ SAITH THE LORD JEHOVAH &c. The formula usually _follows_the sentence to which it refers; here it introduces it, as ch. Isaiah 1:24; Zechariah 12:1; Psalms 110:1. _which gathereth the_ DISPERSED _of Israel_ Cf. ch. Isaiah 11:12; Psalms 147:2. _Yet will I gather_others &c. Lit. "I will yet further gather to him, to his gathered ones." "His gathered ones" is the antithesis to the "dispersed" above. The language certainly suggests (though it may not absolutely _prove_) that a par
