11._That ye may suck. _This verse ought to be joined with the preceding verse; for the Prophet explains what shall be the occasion of joy, namely, because the wretched and miserable condition of the Church shall be changed into a happy and prosperous condition. By the word “suck” he makes an allusion to young infants; as if he had said, “That you may enjoy your mother with every advantage, and may hang on her breasts.” Here all believers, whatever may be their age, are compared by him to children, that they may remember their infirmity and may be confirmed by the strength of the Lord; and therefore this metaphor of “sucking” and “milking” ought to be carefully observed. _From the breast of her consolations. _Some take the word “consolations” in an active, and others in a passive sense; but I prefer to adopt the passive signification; for he means the consolations which the Church has rec...

5-14 The prophet turns to those that trembled at God's word, to comfort and encourage them. The Lord will appear, to the joy of the humble believer, and to the confusion of hypocrites and persecutors. When the Spirit was poured out, and the gospel went forth from Zion, multitudes were converted in a little time. The word of God, especially his promises, and ordinances, are the consolations of the church. The true happiness of all Christians is increased by every convert brought to Christ. The gospel brings with it, wherever it is received in its power, such a river of peace, as will carry us to the ocean of boundless and endless bliss. Divine comforts reach the inward man; the joy of the Lord will be the strength of the believer. Both God's mercy and justice shall be manifested, and for ever magnified....

Verse Isaiah 66:11. _WITH THE ABUNDANCE OF HER GLORY_ - "From her abundant stores."] For מזיז _mizziz, from the splendour_, two MSS. and the old edition of 1488, have מזיו _mizziv_; and the latter ז _zain_ is upon a rasure in three other MSS. It is remarkable that _Kimchi_ and _Sal. ben Melec_, not being able to make any thing of the word as it stands in the text, say it means the same with מזיו _mizziv_; that is, in effect, they admit of a various reading, or an error in the text. But as _Vitringa_ observes, what sense is there in sucking nourishment from the _splendour_ of her glory? This, according to our version, expresses the end of the church's friends being called together to rejoice with her, that they might partake of her joys and comforts, delights and pleasures: but the words may be better rendered, either, according to Kimchi's sense, "therefore shall ye suck" t, c. because ye have mourned for her, and because ye have rejoiced with her; or rather, as Noldius u, "because ye suck", c. partake of her privileges and ordinances, so give a reason why they should rejoice with her. "Breast" is put for "breasts", as Jarchi observes; for as the church is represented as a woman, and as a teeming woman, she has two breasts as such, grown and fashioned, and full of milk of consolation; for "breast of her consolations" is the same as "her breasts of consolation"; see Song of Solomon 4:5,
