Isaiah 9:7

Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. OF THE INCREASE OF (HIS) GOVERNMENT AND PEACE (THERE SHALL BE) NO END - His princely rule shall perpetually increase and be unlimited (). The "peace" of the type Solomon soon came to an end, and was only partial in extent while it lasted; but the peace which Messiah brings in His kingdom is universal and forever. 7._To the increase of the government there will be no end. _He begins to explain and confirm what he had formerly said, that Christ is _The Prince of Peace_, by saying that his government is extended to every age, and is perpetual; _that there will be no end to the government or to peace_. This was also repeated by Daniel, who predicts that his _kingdom is an everlasting kingdom_. (Daniel 7:27.) Verse Isaiah 9:7. _OF THE INCREASE_] In the common _Hebrew_ Bibles, and in many MSS., this word is written with the _close_ or final למרבה ם. But in _twelve_ of _Kennicott's_ MSS., and _twelve_ of _De Rossi's_, it is written with the open mem; but here it is supposed to contain mysteries, viz., that Jerusalem shall be _shut up, closed_, and _confined_, till the days of the Messiah. This is an illustrious prophecy of the _incarnation_ of Christ, with an enumeration of those _characters_ in which he stands most nearly related to mankind as their Saviour; and of others by which his infinite _majesty_ and _Godhead_ are shown. OF THE INCREASE ... - The word rendered “government” here, משׂרה _mis'râh_, means properly his government as a prince - his principality, and is a continuation of the idea in the previous verse, ‘the Prince of Peace.’ It means that his reign as a prince of peace - in extending and promoting peace, shall be unlimited. AND PEACE - This does not signify in the original, as our translation would seem to do, that there should be no end to the increase of his peace, but that there should be no limit to peace, that is, that his reign should be one of unlimited peace.
