To whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. JEHOIAKIM ... JOSIAH ... ZEDEKIAH. Jehoahaz and Jehoiachin are omitted, for they reigned only three months each. The first and last of the kings under whom each prophet prophesied are often thus specified in the general title. As to the beginning of his time and its termination, it has been briefly shewn, why he says that he had been chosen a prophet _in the thirteenth year of Josiah, _and that he discharged his office till _the eleventh year of Zedekiah. _ Now that _Josiah is called the son of Amon, _it is doubtful whether Josiah was properly his son. Amon began to reign in his twenty-second year, and reigned only two years. Josiah succeeded him in the eighth year of his age. If we number the years precisely, Josiah must have been born when Amon was in his sixteenth year; but it does not appear likely, that Amon was a father when he was sixteen years of age, for in this case he must have begotten a son in his fifteenth year; as the birth must have taken place nine months after. Then Josiah must have been begotten in the fifteenth year of Amon’s age. It is hence a probable conclusion, that he was a son by law...

1-10 Jeremiah's early call to the work and office of a prophet is stated. He was to be a prophet, not to the Jews only, but to the neighbouring nations. He is still a prophet to the whole world, and it would be well if they would attend to these warnings. The Lord who formed us, knows for what particular services and purposes he intended us. But unless he sanctify us by his new-creating Spirit, we shall neither be fit for his holy service on earth, nor his holy happiness in heaven. It becomes us to have low thoughts of ourselves. Those who are young, should consider that they are so, and not venture beyond their powers. But though a sense of our own weakness and insufficiency should make us go humbly about our work, it should not make us draw back when God calls us. The whole period contained in this verse is no less than 40 years and 6 months, namely, 18 years under Josiah, two periods of 11 years each under Jehoiakim and Zedekiah, and 3 months under each of the omitted kings, Jehoahaz and Jeconiah. TITLE, ascribing the prophecies which follow to Jeremiah, a man of priestly descent, belonging to Anathoth (see Introduction); his prophetic activity is said to have begun in 626 B.C. (the thirteenth year of Josiah), and to have continued under Jehoiakim (608- 597) and Zedekiah (597- 586). The present book, however, contains prophecies delivered after the carrying away of Jerusalem captive (586 B.C.; _cf._ 2 Kings 25:8 ff.), viz. in Jeremiah 42-44. Probably 2 was originally the title of this chapter only, and 3 is a later editorial addition. Nothing is known of Jeremiah's father, Hilkiah (perhaps descended from Abiathar; see Introduction), who must not be identified with the Hilkiah named in 2 Kings 22:4 ff....
