Jeremiah 15:1

Then said the LORD unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth. MOSES AND SAMUEL - eminent in intercessions (Moses, on the occasion of God's wrath on account of the golden calf, ; Samuel, at Mizpeh and Eben-ezer, ; , "Moses and Aaron" among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name"). MY MIND COULD NOT BE TOWARD - could not be favourably inclined toward them east them. CAST THEM OUT OF MY SIGHT. God speaks as if the people were present before Him, along with Jeremiah....

God again repeats what we have before observed, — that as the impieties and sins of the people had arrived at the highest pitch, there was no more room for pardon or for mercy: and though God seems to have rejected altogether the prayer of his servant, we are not yet to think that it was without any benefit. Jeremiah wished indeed to deliver the whole people from destruction; but he did not thus pray inconsiderately and uselessly; for he distinguished between the titular church, as they say, and the chosen seed, for he knew that many were become the degenerated children of Abraham: nor was he unacquainted with what is said in the Psalms, “Who shall dwell in thy tabernacle, and who shall stand on the mount of thy holiness? He who is innocent as to his hands, and is of a pure heart.” (Psalms 15:1) The Prophet there distinctly shews that hypocrites glory in vain

1-9 The Lord declares that even Moses and Samuel must have pleaded in vain. The putting of this as a case, though they should stand before him, shows that they do not, and that saints in heaven do not pray for saints on earth. The Jews were condemned to different kinds of misery by the righteous judgment of God, and the remnant would be driven away, like the chaff, into captivity. Then was the populous city made desolate. Bad examples and misused authority often produce fatal effects, even after men are dead, or have repented of their crimes: this should make all greatly dread being the occasion of sin in others....

CHAPTER XV _God declares to Jeremiah that not even Moses and Samuel, whose_ _prayers had been so prevalent, could divert him from his_ _purpose of punishing so wicked a people_, 1. _Accordingly their captivity is again announced in a variety of_ _images so full of terror_, 2-9, _that the prophet complains of his own hard fate in being_ _obliged to deliver such unwelcome messages_, 10; _for which too he is reproved_, 11-14. _Immediately he appeals to God for his sincerity, and_ _supplicates pardon_, 15-18;...

CAST THEM OUT OF MY SIGHT - Rather, “send them out of My presence, and let them go away.” The prophet is to dismiss them, because their mediators, Moses and Samuel, whose intercession had been accepted in old times (marginal references), would intercede now in vain....

THEN SAID THE LORD UNTO ME,.... In answer to his expostulations and entreaties, Jeremiah 14:19, THOUGH MOSES AND SAMUEL STOOD BEFORE ME; to pray before me, as the Targum; to make intercession for the people. Standing is a prayer gesture. The Jews say there is no standing but prayer, or that is meant when it is mentioned; Matthew 6:5. Moses and Samuel were named, because they were eminent for prayer, and had success in it, for the people of Israel.
